There’s more than one way to play airsoft and, in truth, they’re all fun. With that said, there’s something extra fun and enjoyable about playing as part of a team. You lose none of the individual enjoyment of playing airsoft, yet you get the additional dose of enjoyment that comes from playing as a unit. It’s one of those things that not only adds a lot to your playing experience, but also adds a lot to your life.
You’ll get a lot from playing as a team regardless of what happens, but you’ll get even more if you’re competitive out on the field. There’s nothing like achieving a hard-earned victory with your friends by your side.
Pre-Game Tactics and Strategy
Just as with playing as a basketball team, you’ll need to dedicate some time to talking tactics and strategy when you’re playing as an airsoft team. The obvious reason to do this is that everyone will need to have an assigned role, such as being an assaulter, support member, or sharpshooter if you’re playing MilSim, or more broad roles if you’re playing speedsoft. In any case, even 10 minutes of discussion can greatly improve your performance.
Enhance Communication
Communication is key when out on the field. Any team that has excellent communication gives itself a significantly improved chance of coming out on top. After all, it’s often miscommunication — or a lack of communication altogether — that holds teams back from reaching their highest level.
Enhancing communication means going beyond the standard levels and really working to make your team’s communication watertight. That means investing in good radios and a tactical IHPS headset adapter so that communication is reliable and consistent without being uncomfortable for the player. Solidifying callouts, code words, and hand gesture messages can also streamline communication, so make sure every player knows them.
Drills and Practice
You’ll have to wait until you’re out on the field to put your strategy to the test, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t prepare beforehand. Running some drills, such as breaking contact or attacks, can make a big difference when you’re actually playing. Ultimately, you and your team will get better at moves the more that you do them, and that’s true even if you’re doing them outside of a structured game.
Off-Field Team Bonding
Finally, one of the most underrated ways to improve as an airsoft team is to invest in off-field team bonding. You and your teammates might begin purely as airsoft teammates, but you’ll likely become friends — and those relationships will only strengthen the more time you spend with each other. You can always tell when an airsoft team is genuinely friends, but that won’t automatically happen on its own. So organize those BBQs, camping trips, and nights on the town; it might just be what brings you success.
