Personal brand building isn’t just for CEOs and billionaire tech entrepreneurs. Almost everyone has some kind of online footprint. You may wish to keep a low profile, lock down your social accounts, and not get involved in any online conversations. However, if you’re looking to build your profile, or become a thought leader or influencer, then it’s a good idea to get a grip on some of the basics.
Assess your existing online presence
If you’re building your profile to further your career or promote your own company, then you are going to need to get a good overview of your historic activity. Is there potentially something out there that could come back to bite you or embarrass you? It’s best to find out if there is any negative content out there.
A quick Google search isn’t going to cut it. There are many online reputation management profile defenders out there that can do this on your behalf and do a deep dive into the internet.
Choose your channels wisely
There are so many different platforms to promote yourself on these days. Popular social media channels include YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat. That’s not including the blogging platforms.
Trying to develop a meaningful presence on all of these platforms would be a full-time job, and probably need the help of an agency too.
Instead, as part of your planning process, find out where your target audience is and concentrate on those channels. There’s no point focussing your efforts on Twitter if your audience is on Instagram.
Develop a tone
You should try and stay consistent with your online personality. In almost all cases, you should try and be as authentic as possible. That way, you don’t have to struggle to stick to a tone, it will just come naturally.
However, there are some sectors where you will have to be very careful about your online personality as it could potentially harm your career.
You should develop your tone of voice before your begin your brand building. If you’re unsure, do your research and see what is already working and what isn’t.
Have a thick skin
The internet can be a great place, full of people who are supportive and appreciative of your content. Unfortunately, there is a very vocal minority on there who exists to troll people and generally be unpleasant. It can be a very emotionally draining experience and cause all types of problems.
Knowing that you’re not going to please everyone is something you’ll have to get used to. Utilize the safety tools on each of the platforms, and if necessary, employ someone to filter these comments for you.
Building your personal brand online can be a very rewarding activity, as well as giving your career a boost. But navigating the online world can be tricky, especially if you aren’t particularly familiar with the platforms you’ll be using.
It’s all about doing your research thoroughly and selecting the right channels on which to target your audience.
