For most people, the goal of having a future in the company in which you are working, is one that they work hard to achieve. If you have a goal of advancing your career, you need to know how to prove your potential to your boss. You cannot progress unless they can see that you are worth it. 
It’s not easy to show that you are worth a promotion or a pay rise, but there is a lot that you can do to try. Some people do training courses and achieve their VoC’s to prove they are ready for the next step. Others choose to prove themselves with their tenacity during the job, hitting targets, etc. With that in mind, we’ve put together six clear ways that you can ensure that your boss knows that you have it going on!

  1. Getting in with the right crowd at work is possibly the best thing that you could do to prove your potential. You need the clearest communication with the top dogs in the business and you need their intel to learn what the best practice will be for you in your career. The right people give you a network to lean on!
  2. Watching the way the company is going and giving yourself a thorough grounding in the industry is going to show that you are paying attention. If you are observant, you’ll know when the best time is to ask for a promotion or a pay raise.
  3. Meetings are necessary in your business if you want to progress. You have to show your boss that you are worth something, but you can only do that if they know who you are. Regular meetings will enable you to get to know your boss on a personal level; this can often help.
  4. You need to put yourself out there to get noticed, and that means stepping up in your position and taking the lead. You need to find ways to be a leader, even if you’re not one in the grand scheme of the business.
  5. Always promote who you are and what you’re doing. It’s not always “great” to toot your own horn, but you have to assume people around you won’t be paying attention to you. You need to give them reason to do it.
  6. Get learning as much as you can. You have to take the skills you have and keep up with your knowledge, and that means honing your craft and learning as much as you can. If you can add certificates to your files and add more strings to your bow, you’re going to be able to show that you have the knowledge that you need to further yourself. If your place of work ever has training sessions, it’s time to sign up and get started. It’s never going to be a bad thing to add more skills.
