It’s well-known that the majority of the STEM field is filled with men. Women tend to go for jobs that are less analytical and more to do with human experiences. Men are much more likely to be goal-oriented such as craving an environment where there are constant deadlines, and vast improvements are being made consistently. For most women they want to work in an environment that is conducive to human progress such as nursing, counseling, working for charities, etc. economists around the world have been scratching their heads wondering how they could possibly get more women into these fields where men dominate. And social scientists are now questioning whether or not this is right to do. Essentially, what would be bad for an economy is to force people into jobs that they are otherwise unskilled for or simply don’t have the interest doing them. As ever, technology always comes to the rescue or at least offers solutions that can be thrown into the mix of thought.
It all begins at home
Where does the revelation of education truly begin? We send our kids to school hoping that they will find a subject that they fall in love with and pursue in their professional life. However we can’t just hope for the best, parents must give their children guidance and support. It’s great that children are introduced to literature at a young age through bedtime stories and nursery rhymes. However, you may find that encouraging knowledge-based learning will help young girls to feel at home with subjects that boys thrive in. Buy them books on beginner’s engineering, science, philosophical thinking, etc. They will present a challenge for young children but sitting down, reading it through and explaining the books to them will spur on love for such matters. Once they’re hooked as a child, they’re much more likely to follow these subject interests on into higher and further education.
Industries give a leg up
Governments are being pressured by activist groups to try and achieve parity in the STEM fields by letting more women candidates through than men. All kinds of practices are being used to get women into these male-dominated areas so that there is a gender balance. Women with interests already in these fields are going to be right at home in environments where critical thought must be applied to problem-solving issues. There are even special opportunities such as this oil and gas app company that provides women with a STEM scholarship. All you need to do is simply write a 1000 word essay about what excites you about the independent operators in the oil and gas industry. Those successful will be working on the software that allows so many operators to understand what is going on at the production sites. The software is for ipads, so those familiar with IOS are going to stand a great chance.
We shouldn’t be too forceful and push women or men into doing jobs that they naturally choose not to do. However, we can make it easier for our children to think differently. Young women especially should be introduced to subjects in the STEM fields at an early age which is the job of the parents.
